Solar Powered Light. Good for hacking/IoT - $10 Amazon

Recommended Posts

Amazon has the Mpow Solar Powerd Wireless Security Motion Sensor for $10. Coupon: POXZYH6W

This is the 4-led version.

There is also an 8 LED version for $15.

Buy 1: $17.99 - $3 off w/ promotion code M5ZUZU3R = $14.99
Buy 2: $35.98 - $7 off w/ promotion code GJAIZ8QV = $28.98
Buy 3: $53.97 - $11 off w/ promotion code SVVBYF3Z = $42.97

It is weather proof, probably IP64. Good for hooking up your sensors. It also seems large enough for a CC3200 launchpad, maybe.

I might snag one.

Calling all IoT guys.

One of the reviews says its about the size of the palm of the persons Hand. e.g. it's small. But wulf has been talking about LED lighting lately, I shoot him a link and maybe we'll get a few.

For the record though, since we're completely offgrid and mostly solar powered, almost our entire homestead is illuminated with LED lighting. The technology is definitely there. We keep an eye on sales at homedepot for the 6W lights, and most of them are decent colour range now days. e.g. warmer than say a couple years ago. So not really harsh white light. Anyway slightly off topic to this post, but thought I'd toss that out there for those who haven't made the leap yet.

Thanks @@yyrkoon. I'll post some pics once I get it. For $10, a solar panel+charging circuit+weatherproof housing is definitely nice.

Oh sure, no problem. Yeah I was thinking along those lines too. One thing that bugged me though was the "5 year solar panel life time". But perhaps since I'm used to "the real deal" when it comes to solar panels, I'm a bit jaded ? e.g. for commercial grade panels no one knows the expected lifetime of many. Since no one has ever out lived one - heh !

One thing that bugged me though was the "5 year solar panel life time".

I suspect the battery life is about 5 years. So after about 5 years it stops working. Saying the battery life is 5 years leads to people wanting to know how to replace the likely "non-replaceable" battery, so marketing says 5 year panel life.

Looks pretty cool! Would be fun to hack the motion sensor to do some some deer detection. Keep those animals from eating the shrubs :)

And how pray tell would you do that ? Claymore in the bush ? Remember, that those have a lethal back blast ~30m behind as well ;)

Seriously though, a squirting water "cannon" turret might be fun - heh

EDIT heh ! Use multiple of these movement sensors to triangulate, and shoot deer with nerf darts ;)

More pics showing fitment:

With the battery out.

MSP430 G2 Launchpad fits nice and snug within the weather seal boundary. Some dremelling is needed on the underside so that the headers can clear.. or you could also invert it:

CC3200 Launchpad fits in the casing, but outside the weather seal boundary:

@@bluehash - looks tight - do you think a minimal MSP430G2 DIP package on a small PCB with nRF24L01 would fit? Also, what do you think of the weatherproofing?

Yes, it will fit.

Oh cool you got one. Just curious. Does this thing seem to produce a decent amount of light ? We're thinking on getting a couple for our front gate

There are two modes, dim and high. On the high setting, you really cannot look into it.  There is a 600mah battery pumping into 4 LEDs.

@@bluehash If you rip out that big blue thing there would be plenty of room. :) :)

Yes :) and also a dremel.

Any more information you guys need, let me know.

Haha, It looked bigger in the first listing!

My new board is 2.25x0.95 inches (57.20x24.13 mm) and about 3.5mm thick with the connector.

The 3.7v battery is somewhat high for the circuits. Nothing a series Diode couldn't fix. There is one on the board, just need to remove the boost converter chip.
