Mercury1964 0
Hello! I recently bought a MetaWatch FRAME, with the intention of messing around with it as an inexpensive, portable MSP development platform. Meta open-sourced the watch's firmware and *used* to sell JTAG programming clips for the watch. Now, however, they've discontinued both my model of watch and its programming clips, and I'm out some cash on a less-than-fully-functional smartwatch. The watch uses an MSP430F5438A microcontroller and is programmable using the Spy-Bi-Wire protocol, according to this SparkFun teardown. I found the sticky post about programming MSPs with Launchpads, but I was wondering if anyone had tried programming a F5438A (or a complete MetaWatch, for that matter) with one. I'm new to the MSP chips, so if anyone had any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, John
dubnet 238
@Mercury1964 First of all, welcome to the forum! You may want to take a look at this post; http://forum.43oh.com/topic/303-launchpad-as-external-programmer/page-3 on page 4 there is mention of a mps430g2 v1.5 Launchpad being able to program a 5438A. My guess is that a 5529 Launchpad would probably support programming that chip as well but it is a guess so you would need to verify it. Mercury1964

I saw that someone had gotten it to work on page 4 but didn't think to check backwards for more. For ~$15, I might just take a stab in the dark and buy the 5529 Launchpad anyway. Thanks for the help! Fred 453
The FR5969 Launchpad has the nicest FET onboard (with EnergyTrace++). If you're buying it just for that then this might be even better that the 5529. Obviously if you think you might play with any USB stuff then the 5529 has that going for it. They're all good really.
