New member messages going unchecked

Recommended Posts

Up until this last episode with Teaphamper I simply put up with the massively

cross posted messages of obvious ads and links to dubious websites. A number

of times I'd be the first to report such silliness.

I knew the 'teen plus size hoodies' was yet another one but I can't report it without

seeing the message. I'm sorry I did that. The pr0n of Teaphamper was TOO MUCH!

(IMnsHO) I've really had enough. I wish this forum would really reconsider some

sort of mandatory timeout or other "management" of new accounts.

Lately I've been off the deep end into other non-msp430 projects but I check in from

time to time. But after these Teaphamper messages... I'm not seeing much need or

desire to return. I'm sorry. Maybe the younger crowd enjoy or get a giggle out of the

stuff but, I'm sorry, I don't.

Maybe I'm acting prudish but... that's the way I am.

Please don't leave yet, I've put in a request to join the moderators, so that I can help keep this site clean. We only have one moderator (GeekDoc) and admin (bluehash) at the moment, GeekDoc doesn't seem to be on that often, and bluehash looks like he is doing overtime, which is a lot for one person in this large of a site.

I suggest that some of the more well-known users here who are on pretty often request to join the moderators to also keep the site up. I'd hate to see this wonderful community we have here go down the tubes because someone put nasty stuff on the site. We need more moderators to help watch for and deal with this kind of thing.

Also, Rusty, as you said,

some sort of mandatory timeout or other "management" of new accounts

Maybe a 'limbo', in which you couldn't post anything within three to five days of registration?

The main group here needs to get together and decide how to deal with this.

BTW: I'm part of the younger generation, and I don't see anything funny about it.

I hear you Fe2, but this time I was out, unable to get the spammer out in time. The one major problem with introducing a layaway period for new member registrations is that if a newly registered member wishes to ask a question immediately, he/she gets locked out for 2-3 days. That's something which 43oh does not wish to loose. The forums are checked everyday for spammers(with member reports) being the most helpful.

I'm eagerly waiting the release of spam hammer created by Dangerous Prototypes to combat this exact same problem. It detects spammer immediately from the time they register. The only issue is that it is Release Candidate and still sorting out bugs. To install an unvalidated mod to the forums before PHPbb3 validation is very risky for the forums.

TL;DR just one request, if possible please bare with us for this month. I should be able to install a no spam mod by mid of this month.

Thanks neutron, we have a couple in line for moderators. If the mod does not work out, new mods will be recruited.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not unsympathetic -- my life has gotten like that too, in the past,

so I do understand. I've really enjoyed this community and hope to contribute more as some

other projects get on down the road a bit further and I can pull out the various tinker toys that

TI has sold to me rather inexpensively.

But after that stuff I saw the other night... I had to say something. I wasn't intending to give

the powers that be a megavoltage shock, just start a fire or turn on a bright light or two. :-)

Well, I was hoping to get that process visibly moving. It looks like something is and I'm

glad to see that.

I'm glad to hear that! I've worked for some seriously sick people and they were much

younger than I was. I know it goes both ways but, that's what I've been accustomed to in the past.

was so... disgusting.

I seem to recall that the Arduino folks prevent links and pictures from being included in the first post

or two. It is a bit of an inconvenience when a newbie has a burning question but it does a good job in

keeping out the spam and porn.

I'm not running off yet, especially after only one of these instances. I'm hanging around

and will watch how things go because I like this group and I see you're making such a big

effort so quickly. I truly appreciate your efforts, blue' -- I really do! Thank you!

Sorry guys (do we have any 'gals'?). I've been a bit busy with other things. This forum community has really grown and, as nuetron said, it's pretty big now for two to handle, let alone one (Sorry bluehash).

I'll try to be a bit more active. That, plus the spamhammer, should help.
