Controlling a different voltage circuit

Recommended Posts

I am trying to control a higher-voltage circuit with the low-power MSP430G2231 and Launchpad that is rated for ~3.3V. The circuit I want to control is 9V. I can use a transistor for such low-voltages, but how would I wire the circuit so that both circuits have separate power supplies? I have a 3V power supply that I will use to power the uC and the other circuit has a 9V power supply as well. I'm a newbie to uC's (but not programming) and a novice in electronics so thank you for your help.

Nevermind, I just connected the negative wires, is this the proper way though?
