[Piccolo] Are MSP430 BoosterPacks compatible with C2000 BoosterPacks

Recommended Posts

Most of the boosterpacks that are out there should be compatible with the exception of the capacitive touch boosterpacks (both standard and C5x audio). We've actually developed a loose standard to guide boosterpack development and all LaunchPads (past, present, and future....) will do their best to conform to this standard:

There is a spreadsheet floating around TI internally which details boosterpack/launchpad hardware and software compatability. Look for more information to be added to the TI Processors wiki as the C2000 Launchpad is released.

Thanks Trey. One other question.. if I were to use any of the MSP430 BPs, do they fit only on the outer row?.. or inner row.

I ask because if a designed wants to make his/her board compatible with C2000/Stellaris, there will have to be dual rows on each side of the BP.

Good catch! Yes MSP430 boosterpacks only fit on the outer row of pins, but that doesn't mean they are incompatible. It will actually end up being the other way. Stellaris and C2000 BP, will not be compatible with the 430 LaunchPad if the booster pack uses any of the interior pins.

Physically (i.e. BP geometry and fitment) there should be no issues with compatibility.

Hi Trey,

I have multiple Anaren AIR boosterpacks I am using with my MSP430 lauchpads but its rather unclear if they are compatibel with the C2000 Launchpad. I checked the list overhere and the results are unclear ... it seems boosterpacks are either working fully at C2000 or MSP430 .... but maybe I am wrong.

Most of the BPs were made before the C2000 Launchpad came out, so a little software work or hardware pin routing may be necessary.

Also, good find on the page. This is the first time I'm seeing it.

Thanks for chiming in, blue#

Well the pining of simple functions isnt an issue but I was hoping the SPI for MSP430 and C2000 would be on the same pins ... that isnt the case and linking boosterpacks that use SPI on a C2000 seems to be not possible without adding wires ... but again ... maybe I am wrong as I am just in the initial stage of discovering the possibilities.

Hey CorB,

Actually you should be able to use the C2k LaunchPad with the Anaren BoosterPacks. All our serial peripherals (SPI, I2c, UART/SCI) are on the same pins as the 430 LaunchPad.

SugarAddict,

I checked the datsheet, but I'm not sure what typo you're referring to. The text regarding SYNCO looks ok to me.

Hi Trey,

It seems I got confused due to the fact that the pin-numbers on C2000 arent the same as on MSP430. I am used to way the pins on MSP430 are mentioned by port names like P1.5 etc. .

Ive just been walking over the details http://www.ti.com/li...hh2/spruhh2.pdf and indeed see that CLK and SOMI/SIMO are on the same pins ... next step will be to get SimpliciTI running on this board.

Thanks !

Could you document it(simpliciti) in a new thread CorB(projects or codevault). I can now make any forum post thread a blog post, so it's easier for me to push things to the main blog.
