CAN bus termination resistor

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm new here. I have an F2808 wired to a SN65hvd1050 which connects to my car's OBD2 port. Do I need a termination resistor on my end of the board? If yes, what will be the value of the resistor?

Technically the CAN standard states the CAN bus should have 1x 120 ohm resistor at each end of the CAN bus (for two total). Your vehicle is already properly terminated otherwise the CAN bus wouldn't work. Adding an extra termination resistor won't hurt anything and as Spiff says will cut down on reflections. Past a certain point though, too many termination resistors will drop the bus's impedance too low and will cause the trasceivers to work harder than needed which could eventually burn some of them out over time.
