Holy Crap! That place is a GOLDMINE!!!   Check this Traffic Light out.   You might be able to tan yourself with 196 LED's!   Time to whip out the credit card!   I hate you jsolarski.

:) ANother great surplus store is American Science and Surplus http://www.sciplus.com/index.cfm

I'm happy that there is one not far from me.

Those guys must love their jobs because the product descriptions are Hilarious!

For example:

MY FIRST STROBE KIT

For tyro electronics wizards: build your own dual white-LED strobe light. You'll need a 9V battery, solder and a soldering iron. Features a speed switch and rate control knob, and will oscillate between once and a seizure-inducing 60X per second.

or this one:

BIRD YURP

Raptor vomit. Okay, owl pellets. Common barn-owl pellets actually, but don't call them common to their face. You get (2) pellets, each with a (usually) complete rodent skeleton that the owl couldn't digest, plus a small pair of rubber gloves, a pair of 5" plastic tweezers, a 6" long pointed stick and an 8-page fact sheet to help you reassemble said skeleton. Regurgitated in the USA.

Almost every description is nutty.

Crazy people!

I've bought several items from DealExtreme. They are legit, but quality may be pretty dodgy on some items.

I bought some "TT" chips for my kids' DS-lites so I could just let them play backups (We store the original cartridges away from them). They work great, and were about $5 each. Now the kids have all their games on one cartridge, and if they lose/break it, I'm only out a $5 TT cartridge and a cheap 2GB microSD card. That's lots less than one $30 game!

Overall, DX is a good place for cheap Chinese stuff (shipping is typical 3wk China shipping).

You dump your own roms, I'm assuming? :P

Yup. Found a tutorial online (I think through Hack-A-Day). It uses a wireless link and a sftp server. Backed up all the saved games they had on the chips and everything! :D

My girlfriend and I both have flash cartridges for our DS'es. Discovering that wifi ftp server for the DS was really useful when I was trying to do some development on the DS. It's amazing how many games fit on an sd card. I didn't realize they sold them on DX. I probably could have saved a bunch of money.

Speaking of DX, they always have very cheap high-(milli)wattage laser pointers, but they don't ship to the US. Does anyone know a source with comparable prices?

I give you MDFLY.

I just blew a wad of dough there. Excellent prices on SMD resistor kits and capacitor kits.

Just check this out. It's a set of meter probes that let you measure SMD parts. How cool is that?!

No one can touch them on what they offer. Not even Digikey.

Okay, dealextreme could probably touch them but only because they're probably cousins or something.

BWAAAAAHAAAAHAAAAAHAAAAAHAaaaaaaaaaaaa.......

laugh>

I'm happy to feed your addiction!!

I just ordered a couple hundred of these little boxes as a result of ordering the above resistor and capacitor kits. Too bad I couldn't specify the colors.

Now I need a bigger laboratory to keep up you guys.

I know this is an old thread but the discussion about surplus electronics outlets got me thinking and I was wondering if there is anyone old enough to remember Poly-Pak

Funny that I came across your post this morning. I was just thinking about Poly-Paks yesterday. I saw a pile of small poly-bags and it triggered that ancient and very satisfying memory.

I am sure I still have lots of parts that came from them back in the 60s - especially in the resistor drawers and places like that.

I have no desire to end my long addiction to buying parts, which only goes back 50 years now, but I would like to know how to remember what I have already bought.

I can't tell you the number of times I have ordered something and a few days later come across one in a drawer or a junk box here.

OTOH, it is a bit like Christmas sometimes, just opening drawers and looking through to find what you come across - always sparks some new old creative thoughts.

Peter
