Looking for mini X Y platform

Recommended Posts

sorry if i haven't worded this correctly. I have been looking for something like those pick and place machine, which can be controlled electronically, but of much less requirements, only 6 inch by 6 inch, with an accuracy of 2 to 5 mm. I would prefer it to have an x y arm type rather than the platform itself traversing.

Does this kind of thing exists in fiNished product or assemble-yourself package at an affordable pricetag like under $100?

Thanks in advance!

XY stage or XY table might be a good Google search. There are some really nasty "laser engravers" on eBay that use a laser diode. I really wouldn't recommend them for that because of the unprotected doide that's not powerful enough to be useful but powerful enough to be dangerous. However you could probably ditch the laser and adapt one. As roadrunner said, printers and scanners can be useful for a DIY solution.

Of course if you'd really like a 3D printer, CNC mill or laser cutter this could always be a nice justification to treat yourself. Just think of the money you'd be saving by making it dual purpose!

What are you making? A bit more info might help.

Thanks for the input!

How about Lego?

You could also break open one or two junk printers and salvage their cartridge carrier.

Yes I thought about Lego too, but not privileged to be Lego enthusiasts, I went to check out but can only saw the Technics series that are $$$ and not even sure I can make something out of it apart from what the diagram shown.. Will definitely look for junk printers.. and maybe CD - ROMs are ok too?

Thanks for the tips, save time screening out the vast search results :)

This will be the perfect platform I envisaged (from http://volterainc.com/ ):

Yes I agree if it is 3D printer, I'd definitely get one.. in fact got some planning to mount a microscopic camera and built a simple interface to move the scope around, controlled from a PC via LaunchPads, nothing special, just some silly thoughts  B)
