Typically the 1-pin headers and sockets come in strips that can be cut with diagonal cutters... although I've seen plenty of cheap female headers that are smooth/flat without indentations between them.  I just shear off a pin for my purposes.

 

The new "official" TI boosterpack standard has two additional 1x10 headers just inside the main boosterpack headers (so they're 2x10's instead), and on the left side, inner row, the top pin is designated for 5V.  That's where you'll find the 5V source in the new F5529 launchpad.
