I'm a little afraid that I'll step into a big pile here, but I wanted to offer a couple of nuggets *please keep in mind that I usually only deal with University Partners, so I come from a slightly uni

You forgot one:   - TI's lack off an effort in truly contributing to MSPGCC and MSPDebug or its developers.  (By the way - I'd like to thank Peter Bigot, Daniel Beer, and everyone else who's worked

I'm going to use this price increase as an excuse to find something better. I've long put up with all the warts on the msp430 because of the price. At $4.30 I felt like it needed a hand from the commu

What is your source to call this an official price change?

The same as comment #10 in this thread, but I made an explicit question and got an explicit answer: the current store price is a glitch an will be corrected tonight. The future price will be 9.99 $ shipping included, in order to not compete with TI distributors. Price for universities will remain 4.30 (not 100% sure if I got this right).

I called it "official" because it comes from a TI product manager.

Hehe, launch some rumors and sales numbers are through the roof.

But that's a point. I can get them here in Germany for 4.70 Euros plus shipping so it's cheaper to get them delivered from the USA via airmail...

Yep, it might be the case, but this morning the store price was 9.99 $. And the website page    http://www.ti.com/ww/en/launchpad/overview_head.html still shows $ 9.99.

If they are rumors, they are quite loud.

Thanks. I'm not sure if I want to order a few more or use this as an excuse to officially bail on the msp430...

I ordered another 5 while they were still cheap :)  $10 is still pretty cheap compared to arduino - but it certainly reduces the WAF.

On the flip side - I'm hoping mouser and digikey will continue to offer them at about that price and not up the price.  And since I'd already be paying shipping (about $7 for 5 at mouser) - I can throw in a few other components for just a bit extra.

Mouser has over 6000 in stock and they're selling 'em for $4.60, so yeah... My first LP was from mouser fwiw, I didn't know about the TI estore and tossed it in as an order-stuffer.  I got the v1.4 LP too since they had so much back-stock... I'm hoping Mouser's current inventory is all v1.5 stuff (although frankly I won't be ordering any more anyhow, 2 of the value-line LP's is plenty IMO)

This is kinda silly.  If they are just doing it to keep the distributors happy, then they should just stop supplying them to distributors.  Distributors can sell the "real" EVBs that most of us can't afford as hobbyists.  Motorola also had 68HC11 kits for $68.11 in the '90s (a great deal on an EVB back then, especially considering all of the parts that have to go into a 68HC11 board).  They also ultimately raised the price by almost 2x.

That isn't to say that $10 is a bad price, but $4.30 is probably the only reason to have an MSP430 Launchpad over some of the competition.  Otherwise, you might as well move right up to ARM and an STM32 Discovery board to learn your micros if price and and picking an architecture with a good future are your pritorities.

It isn't like the MSP430 launchpad has more than $2 of real cost on the parts and fabrication.  TI probably pays far more for their express shipping of the hardware.

  $10 is still pretty cheap compared to arduino

You can get from ebay Arduino Nano V3 USB FTDI FT232RL ATmega328 Flash 32KB RAM 2KB EEPROM 1KB for $10, or regular size form factor Arduino for $12.80. You can even get for $3.11 USB AVR Programmer and use it with several $6.49 Pro Mini Arduio Atmega328 boards.

This is true, but I will warn you that some of these really cheap boards from Hong Kong have pretty poor quality.  I purchased one of the sub-$10 generic Arduino Ethernet shields and found that it had several pair of pins that were bridged due to bad solder reflow work.

I just ordered myself two boards, I currently own just one, I thought the usb to serial part alone of worth the $4.30. I mean, the debugger part and the serial interface are the main reasons to buy a second board anyway. If I want to play with the chips alone, I rather use a breadboard.
