RobG 1,892 Posted October 8, 2012 Share Posted October 8, 2012 I will be ordering more than 100 of the 5050 RGB LEDs with built-in WS2811 controller and want to see if anyone else would be interested in a GB. WS2811 is a 3 channel, one wire, 8 bit/256 levels per channel PWM, constant current LED driver. The great thing about this LED is that it requires no additional parts (except for bypass capacitor) and only one wire to control, so you can have an RGB LED on your board and you don't have to deal with resistors, transistors, etc. Serial output allows daisy chaining of multiple LEDs. I am planning to use it on a 4" x 4", 8 x 8 and 2" x 2", 4 x 4 RGB LED matrix boards and some other boards as an indicator. The strip has 60 LEDs/m and costs ~$15/m, that means the LEDs are $0.25. For matrix, the strip can be cut in pieces, which will save on PCB and assembly time, and for the single part use, they can just be desoldered from the strip. However, the guy who sold me 30 LED/m strips also offered me a much cheaper LEDs, <$0.20/pcs. That said, I will still continue with this GB, but if you are planning on building a matrix, consider getting a strip. In low speed, zero is 0.5us/2.0us(H/L,) one is 1.2us/1.3us, and reset is 50us+. In high speed, pulses are 50% shorter (except reset.) To get the perfec timing, the control function will have to be written in asm and should be called from ISR (or in main with disabled interrupts.) It takes 60us to update one LED, 960us to update 16 LED array. My matrix for example will have 150 LEDs (10 x 15,) that's 450 RGB bytes, 3600 bits x 2.5us, 9ms total time to send all data. @24fps, that will give me ~24ms to massage my data.
