RobG 1,892
OK, so you have the latest board (schematic above.) You only need one opto, 6N or HCPL. Since HCPLs (SOIC) are hard to get, you have the option to use 6N (DIP and MDIP.) If you get DIP, you have to bend and cut the leads so they match MDIP.BOMMIDITwo 5-pin 180 DIN socketsOK1 or OK2 - 6N138/6N139/HCPL0700/HCPL0701IC2 - 74LVC1G07DBVD1 - 1N4148/1N914 SMDR1 - 220 0805R2 - 270 0805R7 - 68 0805R8 - 68 0805MCUIC1 - MSP430G2xx3IPW20 (or IPW20R) MSP430G2553IPW20 for exampleC1 - 0.1uF 0805C3 - 1nF 0805R3 - 47k 0805optional displayNokia 5110C4 - 0.1uF 0805R4 - 47k 0805optional memoryIC4 - 23Kxxx or 25AAxxx SN package, 23K256-E/SN or 25AA640-I/SN for exampleC6 - 0.1uF 0805optional LDO (when 3.3V is not available)IC3 - 1117-33 SOT223 (any 1117 series 3.3V LDO, make sure Vout is in the middle)C2 - 10uF/6.3V 3528 or B case (can be 1u - 22u, doesn't have to be tantalum, ceramic is OK, see below)C5 - 10uF/16V 3528 or B case (voltage depends on Vin, can be 1u - 22u, doesn't have to be tantalum, ceramic is OK, see below)*Going forward, all my boards will use ceramic caps instead of tantalum, so you can get 4u7 0805 which should be cheaper than tantalum one.optional potsR5, R6 - 10k to 50koptional switchesS1-S5 - 6mm tact switches elpapais and GeekDoc
marvkaye 0
Thanks so much, Rob, for your detailed BOM and noob-friendly explanation. I'm sure after hanging around here for awhile and expanding my horizons a bit some of these things will become obvious to me as well... but in the meantime I do appreciate the speedy reply to my inquiry and the gentle push in the right direction. I'm sure I'll have other questions along the way, looking forward to learning all I can. Thanks again.... <marv>

simon 0
Wow another version? Anyways, I ordered the part number DEV-MSP-MIDI-BOOST-PCB, I was kind of hoping it would be partially assembled as I had read earlier in this thread but the two boards that arrived a few days ago are just bare PCBs. No problem. What is confusing is the lack of any documentation, the BOM above seems to be for one of the other iterations (my IC1 is an 8 pin surfacemount part?) and I double checked there wasn't some kind of printed material included with the boards. Perhaps a BOM and schematic could be added to the product page of the currently shipping midi booster pcb or maybe there is another thread I have missed.
RobG 1,892
Can you PM me the picture of the board you have? To make things easier in the future, I will dig up all the MIDI boards I have made and post a picture for easy identification.
