$4.30 LCD Booster - Sold Out

Store Link : The $4.30 LCD BoosterPack - Limited Edition

So I've been working on this for a little while now... I'll get a prototype of the mounting spacer from the CNC shop around the 9th... I have some boards already that were made purely for testing the footprint, lcd, and code. I've already got a batch of the production PCB's on order that are to make sure everything is good before I order a crapload of them... I'm looking at doing 100 of these.

Rob-LCDBack.pdf <-- This is the mounting spacer's general idea in 2d, working with the CNC to get it all perfect.

I will be using the Nokia 7110 LCD... dipmicro still has a fair stock of them, I'm going to order 100 of them when I get my next paycheck.

Thoughts?

I will be taking a minor loss to make this happen at $4.30 each, it's still cheaper than a day at the slopes!

These are just standard questions that I ask myself when I am faced with your situation:

Do you know why you are making these?

Is there a market for them?

Where are you advertising them?

Do you have an order for 50 of these things?

Are you planning on using 25 of these things on your own projects?

Are you rolling the dice and hoping customers will come?

Are you able to afford keeping these in stock for more than 3 months?

Is there a quantity that you can make that isn't financially burdensome yet still cheaper than making something like 10 of them?

Who is your competition?

What is their pricing like?

Can you compete?

How are you taking payment?

How are you shipping?

How much time a week can you spend taking care of your customers?

Will this impact your day job?

Are you passionate about this line of work?

If you're comfortable with your answers then giver!

lol, my plan is to dump a bunch on BH for the store. (So you can grab some other things while you're getting this :D ) This is all out of my hobby ("fun money") budget. Money I would otherwise kiss-away on the coast or take single 2-day trip to my dads house. I do plan on using these myself, at least 10. The mounting spacer is completely reuseable if you want to put the LCD on something else as well, and you could put it inside something else by using the screw holes. All pins are optional as you can cut the tiny trace between the solder jumpers (1.3 comes not connected by default, that's the temperature sensor built into the LCD) I think it's a good project and gives people a cheap ready to use LCD.

It's very kind of you to take a loss on these for the communities benefit, but I don't think anyone would mind paying an extra $ or two to cover costs. You could even put the price to $5.70, still a bargain and could be packaged with the LP for a nice round $10.

Just my thoughts - I don't mind taking money out of TI's pocket on a loss-leader, but it doesn't seem right to do it to a forum member :)

I'm stopping in at the CNC shop tomorrow after work to check out the prototype mounting spacer... I'm going to be mean and not post pics till Tuesday night so I can play with it and make sure it's all good... and that way I can post something cool for having been around here for a year :-P Still waiting on the production pcb prototypes to show up, but I've got footprint test boards I can dink with. :D Guess I should read some more of those nokia lcd threads for code snippets...

I've been here a year... So here's some nice video for ya'll

The CNC doesn't exactly have tiny tools, so there's some minor changes in how the mounting spacer was made. It works, though the mounting clip cuts aren't on this set, they'll be on the next batch which is the 100... hopefully the clipping works, otherwise we'll all have some tiny pcb or something holding the connector down... I could probably panelize that! lol I did talk to the CNC guy about making a dremel table saw too... Gonna need that soon! :)
