Getting into HAM Radio. Need some help

Recommended Posts

It's a lot of work. Don't get discouraged.

When I picked up the ARRL study books I only had six days until the first upcoming volunteer examination session so I rescheduled all my appointments and asked my wife to make sure I stopped to eat every once in awhile (grin). Practicing Morse code worked well for me if I only did it for about ten minutes at a time and at a speed that was always 'pushing it'.

During that first examination session I passed the 20 wpm code test and the Technician, General, and Advanced tests. When the examiners asked me to take the Extra test, I declined and explained that I had not had enough time to study the Extra class material. Apparently, they had only witnessed someone going from Civilian to Extra in a single test session just once before. Four days later, at another clubs volunteer examination session, I passed the Extra class test.

Imagine the surprise at the local radio club when, after attending the March meeting as a guest, I returned for the April meeting with an Extra Class license (lol).

Cheerful regards, Mike
