    Not all is lost.... so for the benefit of other users who want to use the Sharp LCD with a MSP430G2553 micro, I eventually found this library which works

    Note to others... make sure you know which version you have
     
    SHARPMemLCDTxt display;       // configured for 43oh BoosterPack   versus   SHARPMemLCDTxt display(6,5);  // configured for official TI BoosterPack   and comment out the one you don't use. There is also other code provided which is commented out that may be applicable.

    Not enough RAM.
     
    The image displayed on the Sharp LCD Memory display is first drawn on memory, then sent to the screen. Memory consumption is 96 lines * 96 columns / 8 pixels per byte = 1 152 bytes while the MSP430G2553 only provides 512 bytes.
     
    Take a MSP432, CC3200, MSP430F4429 LaunchPad instead.

    The counter keeps working in low power mode, e.g. during sleep(). The only time limit is how long your signal takes to overflow the 16bit counter.
     
    Energia's sleep() function will put the micro into low power mode. Adding sleep(1000) into your main loop will greatly improve power consumption. Also see this write-up by @@Fmilburn for the effects it has on power consumption.
