I've got the same problem with the 50 lcds I bought. One of my boards have the LCD mounted rotated 180 degrees and this problem is really annoying. For the next batch of the pcb I'll have to make sure the display is oriented normally if the settings can't be trusted. :-( (disclaimer - I'm not a 430 user, mostly pic & avr stuff in my designs)
