    Just to throw this out there, I did some work with bldc motors using msp430. See images below. In my opinion c2000 is a little over kill especially for sensored motor control but agreeably cool.

    Now if only it flew haha...
     
    I managed to get a form of instaspin bldc running on msp430g2553 on the first board but haven't touched it in awhile to optimize. My big problem was running the advice fast enough for high KV motors. I think I have a scheme now just need time to implement.

    Agree, today things are just as much about ecosystem as they are about raw performance. With a cross platform product like arm, there's going to be more of that. As far as tool chain, I don't know, are the arm ones really that great? There's gcc for arm but its a pain for me to get used to using. Call me crazy but ccs is just fine for me-the hardware guy...
     
    I do think c2k might die faster, for this cost and power are not niche at all and arms play real well in this area. C2k has a long heritage and reputation for on chip analog though but some of the new ARMs are getting there fast (by using the power and success of c2k as a benchmark).
     
    About earlier comments, I am really looking forward to the energy micro Draco parts and other arm+radio socs, I think that they will fit a lot of applications.

    Personally I wouldn't call msp430 dead for many years but things are getting pretty competitive recently so I presume new designs will go down. ARM has great marketing, that is for sure and a lot of software developers especially are focused on it and are increasingly selecting devices over hardware guys.
     
    As a hardware guy I appreciate the simplicity of msp430, it is a very approachable micro and a lot of times ends up designed in even if the specs don't match up to other chips. One thing that is cool and new with MSP is integration with fram which will let you enter really low power modes for more applications when writing to mem is required.
     
    Btw, I heard a few things about ARM becoming more universal across TIs uC products, it will be interesting to see how that unfolds.
     
    Funny thing is that we're in this pro-ARM movement right now, i'm sure that the coin will eventually flip back to purpose driven processors, maybe that won't happen, I don't know...

    There are reverse mount LEDs that shine through a hole in the pcb. The application is if you have a cap touch bottom or something like that and you wanted to light it up but it still needed to be flat.

    I think the chip in the hole idea is kinda cool, you should ge for it. I know that you would never be able to have a automated pick and place machine do the asm unless the parts were flipped and then re taped or put onto a tray but for hand assembly, pretty cool.

    Shift register is not required, it is just a nice cheap method for driving many LEDs with a few pins of your microcontroller. The other nice thing is that the output pins of these logic devices have very robust drivers which can source or sink 20ma. For a shift reg though you will need a resistor to limit the amount of current through the led so 16 LEDs means also 16 resistors in parallel. Like I was saying before if you use a higher voltage then you can hook up the LEDs in series and save some resistors but a High enough voltage is required. About 2v per led if wired in series.
     
    Since the device is battery powered, I would recommend 2 alkaline cells and then that ti part suggested earlier in the thread. That part includes current control for each led so resistors are not required and you can use the low voltage supply provided by the batteries. Very easy to bread board with dips and th LEDs too.     Thanks bluehash, it would be great to get a few bldc boosters out there in members hands. In fact I have about 20 on hand and another 30 ready to bake. I feel pretty good about the hardware right now but still think that firmware needs some improvement. For the processor, I'm targeting msp430g2553 because of cost but certainly a Stellaris or c2000 part is better suited. I'm pretty familiar with the ti designs for instaspin and they are great, I just felt that it would be too costly to base a open source esc off of a high end chip like drv8312. Also when working with my local ti rep, he told me that no one internally has gotten instaspin working on the value line so that's the sort of thing that gets me excited.
     
    I know theres a lot of bright and dedicated members on the forum so maybe. Can get lucky and solicit some help on the firmware side as I love helping others with their hardware.

    Driving a led without resistor probably is not a wise choice. It is worth the time and space.

    There's probably an example in code composer too. From a hardware prospective, if you are using LaunchPad, it is already bridged over USB to your pc. Just use device manager to find what com port it is enumerated as and open up the hyper terminal session on that port. The baud rate has to be 9600.

    My other suggestion would be using python and QT. I'm a pretty novice software guy but found this to be very easy. I could even point you to some sample code that I have on github if interested.
