    Thought everyone might like to know I got the AccelStepper (http://www.open.com.au/mikem/arduino/AccelStepper/) library working without any hiccups. I'm using a cheap eBay driver with a pretty beefy 3A Nema 23 stepper. Looking to build a CNC eventually. Just playing at this stage but it seems to work well with the launchpad. I'm running at setSpeed(1000) without trouble. I think the opto isolation on these chips is a bit iffy (get what you pay for) so fast acceleration seems to skip some steps, but that's manageable. Thanks again for all the work by the Engia guys!

    Several comments:
    If you are turning ON the LaunchPad and the printer simultaneously,
    use a delay before sending the message, maybe the printer needs more time to begin the reception...
     
    LaunchPad VCC = 3.6 Volts
    Two AA batteries= 3.0 Volts or less
    Three AA Batt. = 4.5 Volts or less
     
    How do you power the MAX232 ? (Supply voltage range 4.5~5.5V).
     
    Setting time of the MAX232 after power on?
    If you are using a MAX232 is good practice to place a delay routine
    to ensure that the charge pump voltage has risen to its proper operating level.
     
    Logic levels betwen MAX232 and the launcPad?

    it's a lot of waiting time to me.
    You will be using the reset button to send the message...

    You probably have a MSP430G2452 in socket on the LaunchPad. This chip does not have a Hardware Serial peripheral and so it uses a software serial instead. The problem is that both Servo and TimerSerial use the Timer resource on the chip and that is what the compiler is complaining about.
     
    Easiest way round this is using a MSP430G2553 which has a Hardware Serial. If you do not have one then you can get free samples from TI here: http://www.ti.com/product/msp430g2553. You want the MSP430G2553IN20.

    This is due to USCIAB0TX_VECTOR and USCIAB0RX_VECTOR being shared between UART and I2C. Unfortunately the I2C ISR code is pulled into even if you only use UART. This results in an increase in size. This will be revisited for the next release to see if this can be done in a more elegant and code size optimal way.

    Table 21 and Table 22 in the 2553 datasheet show Pin Functions shows P2SEL as low for GPIO which is what you want.
     

    P2SEL &= ~(BIT6|BIT7);
    The above will put it those pins into XIN/XOUT mode which is not what you want.
    Looking at the code on http://pastebin.com/BGPC7iBk you call digitalWrite for pin 19 (P2.6). Unfortunately this pin is not in the pin map and thus it will not work.
     
    The fix:
    In the file hardware/msp430/variants/launchpad/pins_energia.h change digital_pin_to_port[] and digital_pin_to_bit_mask[] to look like below. I don't have a Launchpad handy right now so can't test it but am pretty sure that this change will do the trick.
     
    Will fix it and make sure that it will go into the next release.

    It seems that Energia has defined P2.0 for CS and UCBA isn't implemented:

    Yesterday discover Energia, in minutes my LaunchPad was Blinking!
    Hope the Servo and Stepper Libraries will be available soon.
